정미조는 한국 가요사에 불멸(不滅)로 남은 ‘개여울’의 주인공이자, 1970년대 최고의 디바다. 인기 절정이던 1979년 돌연 가요계를 은퇴하고 자신의 예술적 꿈을 좇아 파리로 미술 유학을 떠났다. 이후 미디어와 제작자들의 많은 러브콜이 있었지만, 다시는 음악계로 돌아오지 않고 화가의 길을 걸었다.
2016년 2월, 오랫동안 묻어뒀던 가수의 꿈을 다시 펼치기 위해 새 앨범을 발표하고 극적으로 가요계로 돌아왔다. 무려 37년만이다. 컴백 앨범엔 신곡 11곡을 포함해 모두 13곡을 실었으며, 기존의 가요와는 달리 월드뮤직과 재즈의 어법을 적극 수용해 음악적 도전과 변화를 담았다. 젊은 평론가들은 “청취의 환희” “결코 세월이나 명성에 빚지지 않은 앨범” “세월이 만들어 낸 목소리” “유례없이 완성도 높은 복귀 음반” 등의 절찬을 쏟아내며 노가객의 역사적 컴백을 환영했다.
정미조는 1972년 데뷔하자마자 ‘개여울’과 ‘그리운 생각’이 동시에 히트하면서, 순식간에 스타덤에 올랐다. 이후 이지적 이미지와 기품 넘치는 목소리로 최고의 인기를 누렸다. ‘휘파람을 부세요’ ‘불꽃’ ‘사랑의 계절’ 등 주옥 같은 히트곡을 줄줄이 쏟아내며 은퇴할 때까지 7년간을 완벽하게 자신의 시간으로 만들었다.
데뷔 첫해 KBS TV 신인무대에서 8주 연속 우승했고, MBC와 TBC TV 신인가수상을 휩쓸며 3대방송을 모두 석권했다. 이후 MBC TV 10대 가수상을 2차례 수상했다. 은퇴를 한해 앞둔 1978년 야마하 동경 국제가요제에 한국 대표로 참가해 최우수 가창상을 수상했다.
Jeong Mijo was the heroine of the unfading song Gaeyeowool and certainly the premier diva in Korea during the 1970s. In 1979, at the very peak of her popularity, she suddenly announced her retirement from music and headed to Paris in order to study art and pursue her dream of being an artist. After that, although she received numerous calls from media and music producers, she never returned to the music scene, but focused on walking the path of a painter.
However, 37 years later in February 2016, Jeong finally came back to Korean music scene with a new album and returned wholeheartedly to music, her long-lost dream. Her new album included a total 13 tracks along with 11 new songs, and showed musical challenge, embracing jazz and world music in the songs. Her comeback was loudly applauded by even young music critics, with reviews calling her new release “a delight of listening,” “an album never faded by time or fame,” “a voice created by time,” and “an unprecedented comeback album with high quality and completion."
Right after Jeong Mijo made her debut in 1972, two of her songs “Gaeyeowool” and “Reminiscence” became big hits and put her into stardom. Since then, her noble image and elegant voice brought her golden age. Until her retirement, she kept on her perfect career for 7 years releasing hits including “Whistling” “Flame” and “Season of Love”.
In her debut year, beginning with the best Rookie at KBS for 8 weeks, Jeong swept the Rookie of the Year from Korean top three broadcast stations including MBC and TBC. Later, she also won best singer twice at MBC. In 1978, a year ahead her retirement, Jeong won best vocals at Yamaha Tokyo International Music Awards.
